Hydrogen Peaker Plant
for Owen Sound, Ontario

An innovative facility that produces, stores, and uses green hydrogen to deliver carbon-free electricity during peak demand, strengthening Ontario’s grid.

Project Overview

Current H₂ is proposing to develop one of North America's first hydrogen peaking generation plants in Owen Sound. We finance, design, permit, install, operate, and maintain on-site hydrogen power solutions. The project utilizes off-peak, surplus grid electricity to produce green hydrogen, which is stored and then used to generate carbon-free electricity when the grid needs it most.

As an Independent Power Producer (IPP), Current H₂ owns the assets and supplies power under long-term contracts, ensuring a stable, clean, and reliable energy future for our partners and the community.

IPP Ownership

We develop, own, and operate under long-term contracts.

Benefits for Owen Sound

The project enhances grid reliability and delivers significant community benefits.

Local Jobs & Procurement

Creates construction and long-term skilled jobs, with local procurement targets.

Economic Growth

Generates incremental revenue, diversifies the tax base, and stimulates local businesses.

Grid Reliability

Provides dispatchable power to rapidly respond to peak demand events and stabilize the grid.

Decarbonization

Reduces reliance on fossil-fueled peakers and cuts emissions during high demand.

Infrastructure Upgrades

Upgrades to local transmission lines and substations benefit the entire community.

Innovation Leadership

Positions Owen Sound as a leader in North American energy transition solutions.

Health, Safety, and Permitting

Current H₂ is committed to the highest standards of health and safety. The Owen Sound Hydrogen Peaker Plant will be designed, constructed, and operated in strict accordance with all applicable Canadian and Provincial regulations to ensure the well-being of the community and our employees.

Environmental Permitting

The project will follow Ontario's streamlined environmental permissions process. We will submit an Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR) filing, ensuring compliance with all provincial standards for air, noise, and water.

Regulatory Compliance & Standards

The facility will adhere to rigorous codes, including the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) via the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), and all fuel safety regulations administered by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). All equipment will meet or exceed CSA Group (Canadian Standards Association) standards for hydrogen technology.

Zoning and Land Use

The proposed site is located within an area zoned as 'M2' – General Industrial in the City of Owen Sound's official plan. This zoning permits public utilities and industrial uses, making it an appropriate and compatible location for a modern energy facility.

Municipal Coordination

A proactive partnership with the City of Owen Sound is fundamental to the project's success. We are committed to open communication and collaboration throughout all project phases.

Service Integration and Planning

We will work directly with municipal departments to manage potential impacts and align with local planning, including:

Roadways & Traffic

Developing a Construction Traffic Management Plan in consultation with the Public Works and Roads Department.

Water, Drainage & Stormwater

Implementing comprehensive Stormwater Management and Erosion & Sediment Control Plans that meet all municipal standards.

Emergency Services

Collaborating on emergency response protocols and providing training and site access information to Fire, EMS, and Police services.

A Proactive Framework

Our approach ensures continuous alignment and transparency:

1

Pre-Application Meetings

Engage with planning and development teams early to review conformity, servicing, and timelines.

2

Technical Working Groups

Establish regular meetings with staff from planning, engineering, and emergency services to coordinate approvals.

3

Ongoing Communication

Provide construction updates, manage public notifications, and maintain a designated community liaison officer post-construction.

Proposed Location

The proposed location is ideal for Current H₂'s Hydrogen Peaker Plant, sited in an industrial park next to Hydrogen Optimized and local distribution lines.

How it Works

Harnessing Renewable Energy with Green Hydrogen

Our project solves the main challenge of renewable energy: its intermittency. On sunny or windy days, the grid often produces more clean power than it needs, forcing valuable energy to be wasted (curtailed). We capture this surplus energy and transform it into a powerful asset for the grid.

Smart Value for the Modern Grid

Because our input—surplus renewable electricity—is a low-cost resource that would otherwise be wasted, our project's value lies in providing critical grid stability. We turn moments of oversupply into a source of reliable peak-time power. This improves the economics of renewable energy for everyone and accelerates the transition to a carbon-free grid.

Our Clean Energy Cycle

Our process provides essential balance, ensuring clean power is always available through a simple, powerful cycle:

1. Produce

We use excess renewable electricity to create Green Hydrogen (H₂) on-site.

2. Store

This hydrogen is safely stored, creating a large reserve of clean energy.

3. Deliver

When demand peaks, we use the stored hydrogen to generate reliable, 100% carbon-free electricity.
